The Changing Software Landscape...

The BBC are constantly striving to upskill, reskill, and train their ever-growing internal software teams. Each year, fresh graduates are brought in alongside long-standing team members. But, like with any fluid and forward-thinking industry, the software landscape is constantly evolving. This means the BBC regularly needs to retrain and teach their employees new languages in the context of their in-house projects.

The current internal Scala team was effective, but the BBC wanted to expand their new employee’s knowledge of the language and its application to various projects. They reached out to training provider JBI - who then called on Paper Plane - to run a three-day Scala training course for the team.

... And Personalised Training ...

Paper Plane created a personalised three-day training experience for the BBC’s latest intake of Scala employees that covered not only the basics of the language, but also some key ways the team could actively apply it in their current projects.

The goal was to teach practical applications of Scala in real-life situations that the team could relate to. In front of a group of 13 employees, Paper Plane provided a bespoke training with an emphasis on functional programming techniques in Scala.

Create Skilled Software Teams…

The three-day Scala training took students from having very little to no Scala knowledge to having a decent amount of practical knowledge of the language. At the end of the course, the team could code and use the language in an idiomatic way.
